Camarines Sur Governor Luigi Villafuerte swiches posts with his father, outgoing Camarines Sur 2nd District Representative Lray Villafuerte

CAMARINES SUR, Philippines – It’s as if elective positions in Camarines Sur are just being switched from one family member to another, and locals are no longer surprised.

2nd District Representative Luis Raymund “LRay” Villafuerte handed over his post in the House of Representatives to son Luigi Villafuerte, the outgoing governor of Camarines Sur.

In the 2nd District race, Luigi scored 104,688 votes against Fermin Mabulo who got 59,670 votes, based on the partial, unofficial Commission on Elections (Comelec) tally with 98.49% of precincts reporting as of Tuesday, May 13.

Luigi ran under the National Unity Party while Mabulo, former mayor of San Fernando, Camarines Sur, was a candidate of the Nationalist People’s Coalition.

Luigi was proclaimed the winner on Tuesday afternoon.

Luigi was only 26 years old and had never been elected to any provincial position when he defeated singer Imelda Papin and the late former budget secretary Ronaldo “Nonoy” Andaya in the 2022 gubernatorial race.

In that same year, the younger Villafuerte replaced his older brother, Miguel Luis “Migz” Villafuerte, in the gubernatorial seat. Now, his father Lray replaces him as governor.

The Villafuerte clan has been in power for more than four decades. The late patriarch Luis Villafuerte served as Camarines Sur governor from 1986 to 1992 and from 1995 to 2004.

Lray served three consecutive terms as governor from 2004 to 2013. Migz served from from 2013 to 2022, and Luigi had one term from 2022 to 2025.

That doesn’t even include the positions they held in various districts of Camarines Sur. Lray served three consecutive terms as 2nd District representative.

The 2nd District is the western part of the province composed of seven municipalities, including Gainza, Libmanan, Milaor, Minalabac, Pamplona, Pasacao, and San Fernando.

It was previously dominated by the Arroyo clan but the Villafuertes started to take over in 2016 when they could no longer regain the 3rd District, their original stronghold, after Leni Robredo won as congresswoman– Rappler.com
