Lea Salonga and her trans child, Nic Chien, opened up about the "emotional" journey of self-discovery and parenting.

The pair graced the cover of US magazine People, with the Broadway star labeled as "a fierce ally to her trans child."

According to the article, Nic, Lea's child with husband Robert Chien, "figured out" he was transmasculine at age 14. He began taking testosterone this January.

"I am still figuring it out. It took a while. A lot of crying," he said.

He added that he'd had to have may conversations with his parents, but said that they are "very accepting" so he was never afraid of opening up to them.

"She (Lea) just didn't want my life to be as hard as it would be," he added.

Nic said the process of his transition was "emotional" but also "the most ideal situation for me."

Meanwhile, Lea said she has learned that "you have to raise your child the way your child needs to be raised," adding that this goes for "literally any kid."

"As a parent, I want to set my child up for success. I want my child to feel safe and strong and ready to conquer the world on their own terms," she said.

She also said, "You have to meet your kid where they are."

Lea and Nik are set to star in the Manila staging of the Broadway musical "Into the Woods."

Nic fially gets to fulfill his lifelong dream of "playing boy characters" as he takes on the role of Jack.

Lea will take on the role of The Witch, a role she played in 1994 in the Singapore production when she was 23 years old.

"Into the Woods" opens at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati on August 7. Additional show dates were recently added due to overwhelming demand.
