MANILA, Philippines — The government will continue to provide assistance to the 17 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Qatar who were detained because of an unauthorized rally in support of former president Rodrigo Duterte, the Office of the President said yesterday.
“Since the start of the incident, our embassy has been providing assistance and our labor attaché immediately coordinated with officials of Qatar,” Palace press officer Claire Castro said in an interview with Teleradyo.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac has said that the Filipinos, consisting of 12 men and five women, were granted probational release pending investigation.
No charges have been filed by Qatari authorities against the Filipinos but they cannot leave Qatar until they are cleared of alleged illegal assembly charges.
“This should serve as a lesson. If there are sentiments, the laws of the country where you are located should be respected. The laws in the Philippines are more lenient, you should not violate the laws of other countries,” Castro said.
