MANILA, Philippines — The newly created Office of the Judiciary Marshals (OJM) under the Supreme Court (SC) has formally started its full operation with the appointment of deputy marshals.
Retired major general Joel Napoleon Coronel, retired colonel Randy Remonte and former officer-in-charge of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Eric Distor will serve as deputy marshals for Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao, respectively.
They took their oath before Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo on Friday at the SC Session Hall in Manila.
“Judiciary marshals will be deployed to secure court premises, including halls of justice, courthouses and official judicial events. They will also provide protection to witnesses and secure transport of accused individuals as ordered by the courts,” the SC said in a statement.
Coronel, Remonte and Distor will support OJM chief marshal Manuel Gaerlan, who took office on March 10.
Coronel is an alumnus of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1987. He started as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Philippine Constabulary before he transferred to the Philippine National Police in 1991. He held key positions such as director of the Manila Police District, director of Police Regional Office 3 and director of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.
Remonte is also a PMA graduate under Class of 1993. He started as a platoon leader of the 31st Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army and retired as Provost Marshal in 2023. As Provost Marshal, he reviewed over 700 investigation reports of military personnel for alleged violations of the Articles of War.
Distor, on the other hand, started as Investigation Agent III with the NBI in 1998. He rose to key roles, including head of the NBI Anti-Drugs Task Force in 2017, chief of the NBI Internal Affairs Division and assistant director of the Intelligence Service.
