MANILA, Philippines — Seventeen Filipinos detained in Qatar over an unauthorized rally in support of detained former president Rodrigo Duterte have been released, the Department of Migrant Workers said yesterday.

The group of 12 Filipino men and five women was granted probational release pending investigation, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac said.

“This means they have their liberty pending investigation, they can go to their respective homes in Doha, Qatar and are able to spend time with themselves and their loved ones,” he said.

No charges have been filed by Qatari authorities against the 17 Filipinos, Cacdac said.

The suspects, however, cannot leave Qatar until they are cleared of alleged illegal assembly.

The Philippines will continue to provide them with legal and welfare assistance, he noted.

Over a week ago, 20 Filipinos including three minors were arrested and detained in Qatar for engaging in unauthorized protest action.

The minors were released.

Suspects found guilty of engaging in unauthorized protest face up to three years in prison and fines of up to 50,000 Qatari riyals.

Other countries have taken note of the mass actions and are monitoring the movements and behaviors of Filipino communities abroad, Cacdac said.
