 MANILA, Philippines — A yellow alert was raised on the Visayas grid for three hours yesterday after power reserves fell below required levels due to high electricity demand and the shutdown of several coal-powered plants.

The National Grid Corp.of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the region under alert from 5 to 8 p.m., after peak demand reached 2,512 megawatts, while available capacity stood at just 2,684 MW.

It was the third yellow alert in the Visayas this year, following similar advisories issued in January and April.

This followed the unscheduled outage of three coal-powered facilities with a combined capacity of nearly 500 MW.

Latest NGCP data showed that 20 power plants were on forced outage in the Visayas, while nine others operated at a reduced capacity, leaving more than 800 MW of capacity unavailable to the grid.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin ordered the inspection of the power plants to ensure their timely return and minimize disruption.
