MANILA, Philippines — From playing the iconic green-skinned witch Elphaba in the hit film adaptation of 'Wicked,' British actress and singer Cynthia Erivo will take on the role of Jesus in the Hollywood Bowl's production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
"The Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner, and three-time Oscar nominee is cast as Jesus in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical," Hollywood Bowl confirmed in a social media post published on Feb. 19.
"Jesus Christ Superstar" tells the story of the final days of Jesus Christ from the perspective of Judas Iscariot, using modern rock music.
"Superstar," "Gethsemane," and "I Don't Know How to Love Him" are some of the iconic songs from the musical.
On Instagram Stories, Eviro shared a clipping of the news with the note, "Just a little busy this summer. Can't wait!"

Besides serving as a venue for concerts and special events, the Hollywood Bowl — outdoor amphitheater in Los Angeles, California — also produces limited-run, star-studded musicals, where classic Broadway shows are performed in a concert-style production. The sets are traditionally simpler as the event focuses on the music and performance.
The tradition halted in 2020 because of the pandemic and is only returning this year with "Jesus Christ Superstar."
The Eviro-led "Jesus Christ Superstar" will take place from Aug. 1 to 3.
