MANILA, Philippines – Rappler held a roadshow in Laguna that aims to build people’s resilience against scams, and encourage them to be more critical of the content they consume online on March 28, at the University of the Philippines Los Baños CDC Lecture Rooms 1 and 2.

The roadshow, featuring a public forum and series of workshops, is part of Rappler’s campaign called “#ScamAlert,” which aims to empower Filipinos with the information they need to protect themselves against digital fraud and attacks, as well as encourage them to spread digital safety initiatives in their communities.

This was done in partnership with anti-disinformation coalition #FactsFirstPH, Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, Department of the Interior and Local Government in Laguna, and UPLB College of Development Communication.

More than 110 participants attended the Laguna roadshow.

During the public forum, Gemma Mendoza, Rappler’s digital services head and lead researcher on disinformation and platforms, tackled the worsening risks and dangers of scams.

Meanwhile, Rojun Hosillos, director IV of the Cybercrime Investigation Office at the CICC, discussed the different types of scams, and how to report and avoid these.

Capping off the public forum was a panel discussion on how communities can combat the rise of scams with Department of the Interior and Local Government Laguna provincial director Jay Beltran, and UP Internet Freedom Network’s officer in charge Giancarlo Morrondoz, along with Mendoza and Hosillos. The panel discussion was moderated by Rappler’s community lead Pia Ranada.
