MANILA, Philippines — Miss Universe 2024 Victoria Theilvig, Miss Universe Philippines 2025 Ahtisa Manalo, Liza Soberano, Kaila Estrada, Sarah Geronimo, Anne Curtis, Maine Mendoza — the list of celebrity clients on makeup artists Mickey See and Gela Laurel’s portfolios go on and on.
For those who also want to make it in the fashion and entertainment industry as a celebrity makeup artist, See and Laurel recently gave pieces of advice at Avon Philippines’ recent launch in Makati City.
“I used to work for a magazine before, so under marketing department, so that was, many, many years ago,” See shared his beginnings as a makeup artist.
“With the magazine, I’m always surrounded by shoots, so yes, makeup is every day, so that’s how I started to play around makeup in shoots.”
Laurel then narrated how she began: “Oh, in my case, I don't know if you'll believe this, but I used to do Improv comedy. Back in the day… we had to do our own PR (press release) materials, so I ended up doing the makeup and then one of my biggest, start beginnings was with Avon. So they used to have a group… where they would train their artists to sponsor stage plays, and that was my first workshop that I attended.”
From merely attending workshops, Gela and Mickey are the ones giving workshops today.
Makeup, said Mickey, “creates a great structure” in the looks of a woman.
“What I love about makeup is there are no more rules to makeup,” said Gela.
“Back in the day, a certain product is only used for a certain area, but now there are no rules. You can use lipstick for your eyes, for your cheek. You can use a highlighter for eyeshadow.”
The celebrity makeup artists vouch for Avon’s Ultra Range Lipsticks, and advice women to get at least one nude shade and a bold red shade as beauty kit must-haves.
“So depending on your mood, you can mix both, yeah, layer by layer, so you can be unapologetic, be unafraid to mix and match,” Gela enthused.
For those who want to pursue a career like theirs, Gela advised: “Just keep doing it and don't do it for anyone else but yourself. Keep learning your craft, just keep doing it.”
“Makeup for me is just makeup, pwede mong bawasan, pwede mong dagdagan, so practice and practice and I think have fun, right?” Mickey added.
