It was exactly a decade ago when the indie video game 'Undertale' swept the market. Since then, the game is said to have sold somewhere around five to 10 million copies worldwide. Many gamers recognize it as one of the greatest video games of all time, often topping lists by gaming publications and fan polls. To celebrate, here's a look at how 'Undertale' found its start and became a household favorite.

MEET THE DEV Toby Fox

Toby Fox first dipped into video game development by playing around with RPG Maker 2000 when he was in high school. One of his earliest games was a Halloween mod for Nintendo's "Earthbound." During this time, he also gained popularity as a musician by creating tracks for the webcomic "Homestuck" by Andrew Hussie. In 2013, Toby started a Kickstarter to fund development of the game and received more than his initial donation goal of $5,000. While Toby gave life to the game through coding and music, it was the visuals of Temmie Chang that gave us the iconic look of the characters we know and love.

Upon release, "Undertale" grew quick in popularity through word of mouth. Many popular YouTubers including Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, and PewDiePie streamed playthroughs of the game. Game Theory's MatPat even went so far as to gift a copy of the game to the late Pope Francis, emphasizing the game's focus on empathy. Its gameplay is fairly simple, mixing elements of early turn-based RPG and adventure style games. You play as a child who fell into a world of monsters, and it's up to you how to approach the scenario. There are three possible endings depending on what style you play. You can go the pacifist route by befriending everyone you encounter, a neutral route where you can mix making friends and enemies, or the genocide route where you destroy everything that gets in your way. As you go through your journey, you'll encounter some unique characters to interact with. Among the most recognizable is Sans, a short skeletal creature with a knack for making puns.

Currently, Toby is hard at work on the fifth chapter of "Deltarune," an alternate timeline sharing some characters from "Undertale." A special streaming event will take place on Sept. 20 and 21 to celebrate the milestone.
