MANILA, Philippines — Leading automotive firm Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. (TMP) posted a 45 percent increase in electrified vehicle (xEV) sales from January to November compared to a year ago, reflecting growing demand for this new type of vehicles.
In a statement, TMP said its total xEV sales covering Toyota and Lexus models, reached 16,986 units as of end-November, up by 45 percent from 11,745 units in the same period last year.
The growth in xEV sales was seen as TMP expands its xEV lineup.
TMP recently rolled out the bZ4X, Toyota’s first battery electric vehicle (BEV).
Last October, the firm also launched its most affordable xEV model, the ATIV hybrid electric vehicle (HEV).
The expansion of TMP’s xEV lineup shows its continued push to offer wider electrification options in line with the company’s Beyond Zero sustainability vision.
By 2030, TMP is aiming for xEVs to account for 30 percent of new sales.
This is aligned with Toyota’s regional target in Southeast Asia by 2030.
The strategy also reflects the growing need to address the transport sector’s environmental impact, including its greenhouse gas emissions.
“TMP fully supports the Philippine government’s carbon reduction goals, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent by 2030,” TMP president Masando Hashimoto said.
He said Philippine customers can now choose from a variety of vehicles – gasoline, diesel, HEV and BE – to cater to their mobility needs, depending on their lifestyle and location.
For TMP, HEV technology remains the most viable and accessible electrified option for the Philippine market, given the vehicle’s self-charging capability, fuel efficiency and reliability and the country’s limited charging infrastructure.
The Department of Energy expects xEV sales to reach 50,000 units by the end of the year.
As of end-September, xEV sales reached around 41,000 units.
