If you’ve heard a TikTok beauty creator say, “The uglier you go to bed, the prettier you wake up,” you’re probably watching the beginning of a ‘morning shed’ video.

The morning shed trend is where TikTok beauty creators take off products they used overnight to literally achieve the proverbial “I woke up like this” look – glowing skin, curled hair, tinted lips, and a contoured face right out of bed. These typically include a combination of chin straps, anti-wrinkle masks, hair curlers, mouth tape, skin masks, and lip tints.

In any beauty routine, no matter how complex, what ultimately matters is our personal motivations behind it. It’s important to ask the question: Does it make me feel good about myself, or am I just trying to fit into a new trend? To find my own answer to this question on the morning shed, I gave it a try.

The pursuit of wellness in an expensive world

The morning shed may seem extreme, but if you break it down, it has a lot of parallels in professional wellness services. Skincare masks take the place of facials, overnight curls can be an alternative for a perm, and chin strapping contours replace clinical jaw slimming procedures.

I’m someone who loves a good beauty service, but it definitely takes a financial toll. Basic facials cost an average of P1,500, hair perming costs at least P5,000 in salons I’ve visited, and jaw-snatching procedures like Ulthera can cost over P70,000 for a single session at a reputable clinic. Can you blame an average Filipino for giving a shot at feeling good about themselves with what’s within their means?

Morning sheds are more accessible to participate in since the products can be much cheaper than a service. So if it’s something that fits your budget and helps you build confidence, as Glamour beauty editor Danielle Sinay said about the topic, “Let women enjoy things!” (That said, safety and following label instructions should always come first.)

Trying the trend

The time came to determine if the morning shed is a viable grooming routine for me. I’ve tried an all-out morning shed for a #CheckThisOut video, mouth tape and all. Here are some of the products I used:

Nasalite mouth tape

Heatless Curling Rod Headband

I enjoyed the more standard topical products like the hydra gel eye mask and the collagen sleeping mask. The hair curling rods had potential, but the kind I got seemed better suited for longer hair.

The other novelty items, like the mouth tape and the chin strap, were quite uncomfortable. The chin strap (mercifully) fell off 30 minutes into my attempt to sleep. I saw no benefit to wearing it for jaw definition, but it could help you keep your mouth closed during sleep.

The mouth tape stayed on until the morning and didn’t impede my breathing, but I found the adhesive uncomfortable most of the night. There are many accounts on TikTok of people who enjoy this, though, so I may give it another try.

The results in the morning were… just okay. My skin did have a nice glow, and I sustained some waves in my hair, but the mouth tape left my lips dry, and everything else came off early in the night. I think I would get similar, if not better, results from a classic multi-step skincare routine plus a comfortable night’s sleep.

To conclude, the morning shed was an interesting experience – I did get a good laugh and a solid screen-free 30 minutes before bed, trying to figure everything out. But a simple overnight skincare routine paired with good music and a cup of tea is what makes me feel best right out of bed. If you’re interested, these are my daily drivers:

I respect the folks who can commit to it, though, because we all have individual motivations for our beauty rituals. Whatever they may be, we shouldn’t be beholden to external pressures when it comes to personal wellness, whether that’s the societal pressures of beauty or the “too-cool-for-this” energy around complex beauty routines.

But again, always put your safety first and consult a professional whenever possible! – Rappler.com
