MANILA, Philippines — Still reeling from the disaster of Typhoon Kalmaegi (formerly Tino), the Philippines may be hit by a super typhoon during the weekend as Tropical Storm Fung-Wong heads towards Luzon, PAGASA said on Thursday, November 6.
Fung-Wong, which will be named Uwan once it enters the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), is forecast to intensify into a super typhoon as it nears the country.
While there is a level of uncertainty, PAGASA forecasted that Uwan will likely hit central or northern Luzon.
It will also make landfall as a typhoon or super typhoon, PAGASA said.
Fung-Wong is currently 1,690 km east of Northeastern Mindanao. Currently packing 75 kilometers per hour of maximum sustained winds, it is moving northwestward at 10 kph.
The highest warning signal for Uwan will be Signal No. 5.
A Signal No. 5 indicates winds of up to 185 kph or higher. A warning of that level poses an “extreme threat” to life and property, according to PAGASA.
Severe or catastrophic damage is expected, and houses may be weakened while industrial buildings could also be destroyed.
People and animals exposed to his wind are at risk of injury or even death.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has already declared a state of national calamity, both in response to Tino’s destruction and in preparation for the coming tropical cyclone.
Signal No. 1 still hoisted over Kalayaan Islands.
Although Kalmaegi has left PAR, its strong winds have prompted state meteorologists to retain a wind signal over the Kalayaan Islands on Thursday, November 6.
In its 11 a.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said Kalmaegi was located around 355 kilometers northwest of Pag-asa Island, Kalayaan, Palawan.
It is packing maximum sustained winds of up to 165 kph and gusts of up to 205 kph.
Rough seas are still expected along the seaboards of the Kalayaan Islands, with waves reaching up to 4 meters.
Batanes, as well as the western seaboards of southern mainland Palawan and Balabac Island, may also experience rough waves as high as 3 meters.
