Coastal communities in Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Ilocos Norte and Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Aurora, Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Dinagat Islands, and Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands may face storm surges that could exceed three meters in the next 48 hours.

A gale warning is in effect for the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon, the eastern seaboard of Visayas and the northeastern seaboard of Mindanao.

Mariners and small boat operators are strongly advised to stay in port.

Track, intensity

PAGASA warned that Typhoon Uwan could reach super typhoon strength before hitting parts of Luzon. Heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge may affect even areas far from its path.

The typhoon is moving west-northwest and is expected to turn more northwest by Monday. Its eye may pass near Catanduanes Saturday morning and make landfall in southern Isabela or northern Aurora Saturday evening or early Sunday. A slight southward shift could bring a direct hit to Catanduanes, with strong winds even without landfall.

After landfall, Uwan will cross Northern Luzon’s mountains before reaching Lingayen Gulf or the coastal waters of Pangasinan or La Union on Monday.

Forecasters said the typhoon may intensify rapidly tonight or Saturday, possibly reaching super typhoon strength at or near its peak before landfall.

While the mountains will weaken it, Uwan is expected to remain a typhoon across Northern Luzon and the West Philippine Sea.
