MANILA, Philippines — Singapore turns into a giant cultural landscape with the staging of this year’s Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA), featuring the return of the Festival Village and the staging of the Shakespearean play “Hamlet” featuring actors with Down syndrome.
SIFA will take place from May 15-30 across different venues in the city-state.
It is organized by the non-profit Arts House Group and commissioned by the National Arts Council. The festival marks 49 years with a three-year curatorial arc led by its new festival director, Singaporean director, educator and playwright Chong Tze Chien.
Titled Legacy (2026), Roots (2027) and Renaissance (2028), the trilogy traces Singapore’s performing arts landscape — honoring the past, examining the present and imagining the future.
SIFA 2026 features highlight events that culturatis can visit.
Peru’s Teatro La Plaza will stage its reinterpretation of William Shakespeare’s classic play “Hamlet”. The play features actors with Down Syndrome who draw from their own experiences as they bring to life the English bard’s work.
The inclusion of this production in SIFA is aligned with Chong’s commitment to inclusivity.
Another feature to look forward to is the Asian premiere of Noli Timere, an aeriel performance that fuses contemporary dance, avant-garde circus, public sculpture and installation at the returning Festival Village.
The Festival Village is a centerpiece of SIFA 2026, where indoor and outdoor performances, interactive and site-specific works, a vibrant parade, and experiences that stretch from late night into the early morning are feature.
Chong envisions the Festival Village, which imbibes the festive spirit of the 1990s and early 2000s, as a key strand in his three-year curatorial arc of SIFA.
The festival will also host world premieres of commissions by Singaporean artists, including Strangely Familiar, a transcultural dance production by T.H.E Dance Company.
SIFA was first launched as the Singapore Festival of Arts in 1977.
