MANILA, Philippines — Amid mass protests yesterday against corruption, the Association of Generals and Flag Officers (AGFO) rejected destabilization calls, military intervention and withdrawal of support from the Marcos administration.

AGFO, composed of retired and active generals and flag officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and Bureau of Fire Protection released a “Manifesto of Unwavering Support and Solidarity.”

The group referred to the current political noise and agitations from certain sectors calling for the AFP to withdraw support from President Marcos.

It added that the Constitution, and the principle of civilian supremacy over the military, are the cornerstones of democracy, which the group said are the principles they swore to defend during their active service and continue to uphold in retirement.

“We strongly condemn and reject any call for the AFP to engage in unconstitutional acts or military adventurism,” AGFO said in the statement.

AGFO said the group strictly invokes Article XVI, Section 5 of the Constitution, which mandates the armed forces shall be insulated from partisan politics and that no member of the military shall engage, directly or indirectly, in any partisan political activity, except to vote.

The group expressed full confidence in the leadership of the AFP.

“We express our absolute vote of confidence in the AFP leadership. We commend their steadfast refusal to be swayed by partisan interests and their firm resolve to keep the AFP united, professional and loyal to the Constitution,” AGFO said.

“The Armed Forces of the Philippines extends its sincere appreciation to the Association of General and Flag Officers for their Manifesto of Unwavering Support and Solidarity,” the AFP said in a statement.

The reaffirmation of nonpartisanship and rejection of destabilization, the AFP said, reinforces the enduring principles that guide every soldier, airman, sailor and marine, regardless of status in service.

“The unified voice of our retired and active leaders reaffirms that the AFP remains a pillar of stability and a steadfast guardian of democracy,” the AFP said.
