MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police yesterday allayed fears of a possible rise in robbery and theft cases amid soaring prices of basic goods, saying the PNP is already implementing preventive measures nationwide.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police force has long prepared for worst-case scenarios even before inflation concerns escalated.
“We believe that the present economic challenge will not spiral out of control in terms of peace and order. That is not in our blood as Filipinos. But the PNP security plan and personnel training are always geared toward worst-case scenarios,” Nartatez said.
He said foot and mobile patrols have been intensified, particularly in high-risk areas such as markets, transport hubs and commercial districts.
“We are not only reactive, we are preventive. We use data analytics to identify hotspots and increase police deployment in these areas,” he said.
The PNP said it has increased police visibility in public markets, transport terminals and shopping centers. Random checkpoints and mobile patrols are also being conducted, especially during peak hours.
“Rest assured that the PNP is fully prepared and on top of the situation. There is nothing to worry about, but let us remain vigilant. Cooperation is vital to keep our communities safe,” Nartatez said.
Meanwhile, the National Police Commission and the Department of Education have strengthened the Napolcom-DepEd partnership to advance crime prevention efforts through schools under the 2026 National Crime Prevention program.
“Embedding values formation and awareness at the level of our schools is one of the most sustainable approaches to crime prevention,” said Napolcom Commissioner Josephus Angan.
DepEd officials expressed support for integrating crime prevention in the curriculum, including programs on student leadership, safety and awareness of risks such as bullying, online exploitation and grooming.
The consultation also aimed to align strategies and identify measures for nationwide implementation of the program.
