MANILA, Philippines — After her successful stint at the first “Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition,” young actress Charlie Fleming became so busy with work that she is finding it difficult to fall asleep easily.

With projects lining up one after another, there are just days that Charlie can't fall asleep. She shared this personal information at the “8-Hour Movement: A Wake-Up Call for Better Sleep” event, which mattress brand Uratex brought to Abenson Waltermart Makati on March 14, in celebration of World Sleep Day.

A highlight was an expert talk by Dr. Reinzi Bautista of the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine, who shared insights into the science behind the 8-Hour Movement, with emphasis on how consistent sleep habits and a supportive sleep environment contribute to overall health and wellness.

“But I just take melatonin [supplements] to try to put myself to sleep. Because it's really been a problem with me. If I can't sleep, I'll end up overthinking or things like that,” the breadwinner from Cagayan de Oro said. “I think it's very common for people our age right now. We tend to overthink a lot before we sleep.”

“Or your body is so used to being awake at a certain time. That you can't fall asleep anymore. So, something that I've been trying to avoid since my peak schedule is to avoid this melatonin at the moment,” said the pretty teenager, who will next be seen on “The Master Cutter” with Dingdong Dantes and Max Collins.

Melatonin, according to healthline.com, is a hormone that your body makes naturally and is often called the sleep hormone, as high levels can help you fall asleep.

Melatonin works with the body’s circadian rhythm, letting you know when it’s time to sleep, wake up, and more. It also helps regulate blood pressure, blood glucose, body weight, hormone levels and body temperature.

Because melatonin helps the body prepare for sleep, people who don’t make enough of it at night can have trouble falling asleep, especially those like Charlie whose work schedule can be erratic.

“Because I've heard it's like mixed with your hormones. I'm not a doctor. but I have a lot of friends who really talk me out of [taking melatonin] and things like that. So, that's something I'm trying to avoid,” she revealed.

Charlie then asked Dr. Bautista if melatonin is okay.

“Actually, melatonin, we all have it. So, if you're not trying to change something about your sleep, you don't need it. [Charlie’s] correct with that,” said Dr. Bautista. “But sometimes I use it to fix other types of sleep problems. And this is when, maybe a consultation with a sleep specialist is warranted,” the sleep doctor said.

“And I'm glad [that Charlie was] talked to by [her] friends regarding the possible effects also,” Dr. Bautista added. “Because we don't want to be taking things that we're not sure about the effects of.”
