The celebrated cultural icon leaves behind a prominent artistic legacy spanning over seven decades

MANILA, Philippines – Renowned artist Juvenal Sansó has died. He was 95.

Leon Gallery and Fundacion Sansó confirmed the news on Saturday, March 29. A celebrated cultural icon with a career spanning over seven decades, Sansó leaves behind a legacy of artistic prominence that has shaped Philippine and international art.

Sansó is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Merit Award from the Philippines, the Order of Isabella, a knighthood from the King of Spain, and the Chevalier des Arts et Letres from the French government.

“In his long and productive life, Sansó established himself as one of the country’s most notable modernists, with more than 70 years of work,” Fundacion Sansó wrote.

“His legacy lives on in Fundacion Sansó, which has been running his museum, authenticating his works, and awarding scholarships to deserving art students, scholars, artists, and cultural workers all over the country, as well as creating programs that promote art and culture, as Sansó wished,” it added.

His works are housed in esteemed institutions such as the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris, MoMA in New York, and the National Museum of the Philippines.

Born in Reus, Spain, on November 23, 1929, and raised in the Philippines, Sansó’s artistic journey was deeply influenced by his experiences during World War II. His early works depicted scenes of war, but his later pieces transitioned into more peaceful art — serene landscapes and vibrant floral compositions.

In 1964, his etching “Lueurs” was named Print of the Year by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

A public wake for Sansó will be held at Heritage Memorial Park Chapels 7 & 8 in Taguig City on April 1 and 2, from 2 pm to 10 pm. Mass will be held on both days at 7 pm. Friends and fans are invited to pay their respects and share their memories.
