MANILA, Philippines — To make nighttime cycling safer and more secure in Marikina, the local government installed 92 light-emitting diode or LED lamps along the city’s bike lane corridors.
Mayor Marjorie Ann Teodoro led the ceremonial lighting of the LED lamps on Friday, along with her husband, Marikina 1st District Rep. Marcelino Teodoro.
Organized by the Marikina Bikeways Office, the event gathered local bike groups and cycling enthusiasts along the newly lit bike lanes from Chapagnat Street in Barangay Marikina Heights to Goodrich Village Subdivision in Barangay Concepcion Uno – spanning a length of 2.6 kilometers.
The mayor said the local government aims to install LED lamps in all of the city’s 70-kilometer bike lanes.
Teodoro said the project is not just a beautification of bikeways but ensures that cyclists are safe to travel in the city even during nighttime.
She noted that developing an integrated mobility ecosystem through expanding and maintaining bike lanes benefits not only bikers but also joggers and pedestrians.
