MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos will embark on a five-day state visit to India next week from Aug. 4 to Aug. 8 upon the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a statement released by the Presidential Communications Office yesterday.

It will be Marcos’ first visit to India and his 36th overseas trip since assuming the presidency in 2022.

The President and his delegation will meet with Indian officials, investors and the Filipino community.

In a separate statement, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said Marcos is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions on Aug. 5. He will also meet with Indian External Affairs Minister Rastrapatiji Smt. Droupadi Murmu and former foreign secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

“The visit is an opportunity for both leaders to set the path for future bilateral cooperation, and to engage on regional and international issues of mutual interest,” the Indian external affairs ministry said.

Marcos will likewise travel to Bangalore for business meetings. He will return to the Philippines on Aug. 8.

The President will be accompanied by First Lady Liza Marcos, Cabinet members, senior officials, dignitaries and business representatives.

The last state visit to India by a Philippine president was undertaken by then president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in October 2007.

In January 2018, then president Rodrigo Duterte traveled to New Delhi to join the

Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-India Commemorative Summit. A year later, Indian president Ram Nath Kovind undertook a state visit to the Philippines.

According to the Indian external affairs ministry, the Philippines and India have developed a strong partnership across a wide spectrum of areas, including trade and investment, defense and security, maritime cooperation, agriculture, health care, pharmaceuticals and digital technologies. The two countries are closely engaged at regional level, including through India’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN, it added.

“India’s relations with the Philippines are an integral pillar of our ‘Act East’ policy, Vision MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) and our vision of the Indo-Pacific,” the ministry said.

The Philippines and India are celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations this year. They established diplomatic relations in November 1949.
