Satellite rendering shows a tropical depression outside the Philippine area of responsibility as of 5:50 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025.
PAGASA
MANILA, Philippines — A tropical depression hovering outside the Philippine area of responsibility is not expected to enter soon and has no current effect on the monsoon rains, PAGASA said on Friday, August 1.
In its 5 p.m. public weather forecast, the state weather bureau last spotted the tropical depression 1,365 kilometers east northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon as of 3 p.m.
According to PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja, the tropical depression is heading east and is forecast to move northeast, away from the Philippines.
"So mayroon na lamang po maliit na tsansya na itong tropical depression ay pumasok pa ng ating Philippine area of responsibility. So maliit 'yung tsansya na tatawagin natin itong 'Fabian,'" he said.
(So there is only a small chance that this tropical depression will still enter our Philippine Area of Responsibility. So there’s a slim chance that we will name it "Fabian.")
He added that the tropical depression is unlikely to impact the country directly, as satellite images show its cloud clusters are well outside Philippine boundaries. It is also too distant to influence the southwest monsoon, Estareja said.
Fair weather, rain
PAGASA has forecast a high chance of rain over extreme northern Luzon — including Batanes, the Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Abra — due to habagat on Saturday, August 2.
Meanwhile, most of central and southern Luzon, including Metro Manila, can expect generally fair weather from morning to afternoon with clear skies. Cloudy conditions are more likely over parts of northern Luzon, especially in mountainous areas.
Fair weather will also continue to prevail over Palawan and most areas in the Visayas and Mindanao, although brief periods of cloudiness, isolated rain showers and localized thunderstorms may still occur.
