MANILA, Philippines — A low-pressure area (LPA) inside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) has a “high” chance of developing into a tropical cyclone, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration reported.
Based on the latest weather satellite monitoring as of 3 p.m. yesterday, the LPA was located over the coastal waters of Gasan, Marinduque.
PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said the LPA is expected to move near the waters of the West Philippine Sea today. If it develops into a tropical cyclone today, it will be given the local name Henry.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon continues to affect the western section of Mindanao.
According to PAGASA, the LPA will continue to bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Metro Manila, the Visayas, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa and the Bicol Region.
The southwest monsoon, meanwhile, will affect the Zamboanga Peninsula, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Lanao del Norte, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato, Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental.
The rest of Mindanao is expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms, while the rest of Luzon will experience isolated rainshowers caused by localized thunderstorms.
Heightened alert
With the threat of worsening weather, the Philippine Coast Guard placed its search and rescue units in Bicol, Oriental Mindoro and Batangas on heightened alert on Monday for the possible onslaught of the LPA.
Personnel and assets are on standby to ensure immediate response to maritime emergencies, search and rescue and humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations, if needed.
The PCG advised fishermen, operators of small boats to monitor official weather advisories and prioritize safety at all times.
Classes suspended
Amid the rains brought by the LPA, several LGUs suspended face-to-face classes yesterday.
In Laguna, in-person classes in all levels in both public and private schools were suspended in Santa Cruz, Pagsanjan, Pila, Magdalena, Cabuyao City and San Pablo City.
Face-to-face classes in all levels in both public and private schools were also suspended in Balete, Batangas.
In Antique, classes from preschool to senior high school in both public and private schools were suspended in Barbaza, Culasi, Tibiao, Sebaste and Libertad.
Students, parents and school personnel were advised to monitor official announcements from their respective local government units and school authorities for further updates. — Evelyn Macairan, Bella Cariaso
