TACLOBAN CITY — A candidate for city councilor in Borongan City in Eastern Samar committed suicide on Tuesday afternoon, May 13, 2025, a day after learning of his loss in the elections.
The Borongan City Philippine National Police confirmed to The Manila Times the suicide incident of the losing candidate in Barangay Campisao, Borongan City.
Investigators said the losing candidate used a gun to kill himself.
The police could not say the type of gun used by the victim in the incident now being probed by the Scene of Crime Operatives (SOCO) to determine the kind of weapon used and how many shots the victim sustained on his body that caused his death.
The victim was a young businessman and a popular musician in Eastern Samar who ran as an independent candidate for city councilor.

"We were shocked to hear of the suicide incident. He was still young," a family member told TMT.
The victim had experience in politics, as he had been campaigning for senatorial candidates in the past elections, a source said.
No details yet of the interment and the family asks for prayers for the victim.
In previous elections, a vice mayor in Sta. Fe, Leyte, who ran and lost in the mayoral race, had also committed suicide by hanging in his hut on the farm.
A meat dealer, who also ran in the past, got depressed as he distributed all his meat on the eve of the election only to lose.
The Department of Health in Eastern Visayas has dispatched its personnel to its nearest rural health centers to assist people, especially candidates who have suffered mental distress.
