REFLECTIONS TODAY
Faith is handed over from generation to generation. The family is the first depository of the faith, and every Christian child grows into the community of faith primarily through the parents, family members, as well as godparents. We remember the words of Paul to Timothy, “I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and that I am confident lives also in you” (2 Tm 1:5).
To highlight the role of grandparents in the propagation of the faith, Pope Francis established World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly as a reminder of the important role they play as a link between generations.
This is celebrated every year on the fourth Sunday of July close to the liturgical celebration of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the parents of Mary, and therefore Jesus’ grandparents.
Like the elderly Simeon and Anna, as pious Israelites, they were given the grace to see the fulfillment of God’s promise of salvation, what many prophets and righteous people longed to see and to hear.
Pope Francis invites the young to be close to the elderly, “When intergenerational relationships exist, a collective memory is present in communities, as each generation takes up the teachings of its predecessors and in turn bequeaths a legacy to its successors.
In this way, they provide frames of reference for firmly establishing a new society. As the old saying goes: ‘If the young had knowledge and the old strength, there would be nothing they could not accomplish’” (Christus Vivit, 191).
First Reading • Ex 24:3-8 [or Sir 44:1, 10-15]
When Moses came to the people and related all the words and ordinances of the Lord, they all answered with one voice, “We will do everything that the Lord has told us.”
Moses then wrote down all the words of the Lord and, rising early the next day, he erected at the foot of the mountain an altar and 12 pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.
Then, having sent certain young men of the children of Israel to offer burnt offerings and sacrifice young bulls as peace offerings to the Lord, Moses took half of the blood and put it in large bowls; the other half he splashed on the altar.
Taking the book of the covenant, he read it aloud to the people, who answered, “All that the Lord has said, we will heed and do.” Then he took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words of his.”
Responsorial Psalm • Ps 50
“Offer to God a sacrifice of praise.”
Gospel • Matthew 13:16-17 [or Mt 13:24-30]
“But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”
