American Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the 267th leader of the Catholic Church on Thursday, May 8, after a two-day conclave to choose the new pope.
Taking the name Leo XIV, he is the first pontiff from the United States. He also holds Peruvian citizenship after having served as a missionary in Peru for two decades.
The conclave included 133 cardinals who were eligible to participate in a papal election.
