Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle talks about his 'first act of charity' for Pope Leo XIV, who also gave him a memorable gift

MANILA, Philippines – Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle recounted light moments in the two papal elections he has attended: the 2013 conclave which elected Pope Francis, and the 2025 conclave which elected Pope Leo XIV.

In a press conference on Friday, May 9, Tagle told the story of the candies he brought into the Sistine Chapel — one of which he gave to Cardinal Robert Prevost, who would later be elected as Leo XIV.

“That’s my first act of charity to the Holy Father,” Tagle, laughing, said in Filipino.

He also talked about the first thing Leo XIV gave him soon after the conclave: Leo’s first signature as the 267th pope.
