Ateneo sweeps Nitura, Adamson in second clash

POWER. Ateneo's AC Miner soars for an attack against Adamson in UAAP volleyball action.

Ateneo makes sure there’s no repeat of its first-round encounter against Adamson where the Blue Eagles blew a two-set advantage and Lady Falcons' rookie star Shaina Nitura debuted with a league record

MANILA, Philippines – Ateneo sure learned its lesson.

Smarting from a painful first-round battle, the Ateneo Blue Eagles dominated the Adamson Lady Falcons this time, finishing them off in straight sets, 25-23, 25-14, 25-23, to tally their third consecutive win in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, March 29.

Ateneo showed poise and made sure not to replicate its opening-day loss when it blew a 2-0 set lead against the same team — a five-set loss that also saw Adamson sensation Shaina Nitura set a then rookie scoring record of 33 points.

“I think our best skill today was our serves. Our serves did a lot of damage to the opponent. This is important, and in the hard moments, my team continued to focus and it’s the best to do for this moment,” said Ateneo head coach Sergio Veloso, whose team had 12 service aces to Adamson’s 5.

AC Miner led Ateneo’s balanced scoring attack with 13 points, while skipper Lyann de Guzman added 12 as the Blue Eagles improved to 4-5, within reach of a coveted top-four slot.

Playmaker Taks Fujimoto distributed 17 excellent sets in a game which just needed an hour and 24 minutes to conclude.

The Ateneo players said they’re pleased with the team’s maturing mindset, especially since the roster was reduced to 11 healthy players after losing Zel Tsunashima and Sobe Buena to season-ending injuries.

“I tell my players to really embrace our respective roles, and just follow what coach tells us,” said De Guzman.

“There were challenges posed but our fight is not over, we could still fight every game and have that mindset of helping each other inside the court,” she added.

Nitura — the league-leading scorer who opened her collegiate career with that scoring outburst against Ateneo, and had since set another mark with an all-time best of 38 points — finished as the Lady Falcons’ lone double-digit scorer with 21.

Up next for the Blue Eagles are rivals La Salle on Wednesday, April 2, at 1 pm in the same venue, while Adamson will go up against UST on the same day at 3 pm. – Rappler.com
