The students of Jose Rizal University (JRU) mounted a fun run dubbed "Pawsitive Strides: Run for the Homeless Tails" for the benefit of stray animals under the care of The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS Philippines).
On Sunday morning, JRU students, athletes, and fitness enthusiasts, together with their pets, came together to participate in a fun run along Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City to support the cause.
According to Ashvyll Pattung, the event director who is a fourth year tourism student at JRU, this was the first time the university held a fun run for the benefit of animals.
"One of the reasons why we pushed for a pet fun run is that JRU is a pet-friendly university," Ashvyll told GMA News Online.
The event director said now more than ever is the perfect time to raise awareness about animal welfare because of news of recent animal abuses and cruelties in the country.
"Right now, ang dami naming nakikita sa social media na cats and dogs, parang pinag-ti-tripan sila ng ibang tao," she said. "Bilang pet lovers, masakit siya para sa'min."
Ashvyll also said they chose to partner with PAWS Philippines because they visited the shelter and got motivated to help however they could.
"Na-inspire po kami na kunin ang PAWS Philippines as our beneficiary kasi gusto naming matulungan 'yung mga pets nila," she said.
"We visited their shelter and that served as an inspiration na 'yung mga Nakita naming pets doon, matutulungan namin," she added.
All proceeds and donations from the fun run will go to PAWS Philippines.
