Seeing Denise Laurel again after a long time brought back fond memories. Denise looked stunning when she guested on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda” to promote her latest GMA Afternoon Prime series, “Prinsesa ng City Jail,” where she plays Divina Williams. She returns onscreen as a Kapuso star after 20 years.

“Kinakabahan ako actually kasi ibang kontrabida ang makikita nila dito sa akin,” she revealed. But there is no doubt Denise will portray her character with flying colors given her versatility as an actress.

She talked about her son during the interview. “I love being a mom. God is so good! Binigyan Niya ako ng napaka-cool at napakabait na anak. Ang lambing. Di ko siya pinapagalitan, Tito Boy. Nag-uusap lang talaga kami.” They spend time together enjoying the same interests like drawing and comic books.

Denise is also active in hosting fan meets of various Korean celebrities. She has been using her hosting skills as a former VJ on television. Denise was proud to say she has been a K-pop fan since 2010. “I used to go to K-pop events when I was very young, noong sinasabi pa nilang jologs siya.” The actress became busy with her showbiz career, but she finally got time to watch television and listen to music again during the pandemic.

“Noong end ng pandemic, when people were going out already, just for fun, ‘Hey, do you, guys, need a host? It’s a hobby for me, like you don’t have to sweat it. Don’t even pay. It’s for fun. I just wanna have fun.’ I know I can do it because I used to do music concerts back in the day,” she said. This simple inquiry has led her to get into the K-pop world as a regular host of various events.

Every fangirl would probably want to be in Denise’s shoes. She has shared the stage with several famous Korean idols. Denise admitted during our conversation that she got the most starstruck with ASTRO member Cha Eun-Woo. “He looks unreal. He looked like an AI. He was so mild-mannered. Mas gwapo pa siya in person than how you see him on TV. And he’s very kind. Very professional. May pinagdadaanan siya noong time na iyon, but he was still powered through with his work and he delivered,” Denise shared.

Hosting fan meets also gives her a chance to hang out with and talk to fellow fangirls. She takes her hosting job seriously because she considers herself a Philippine representative. “I would take care and give them the full respect that they deserve, as how I would like to be treated as an artist. I make them feel comfortable. I never touch. I always have space. I feel like I’m representing the Philippines. I want them to know that in the Philippines, people are professional. We love what we do. It’s fun to work with us. We’re sensitive and respectful.”

More K-pop adventures surely await Denise as she enjoys riding the Korean Wave.
