Honor the leaders for UN Sasakawa Award 2025

THE United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction is now accepting nominations for 2025.

This prestigious award — established in 1986 by the Nippon Foundation Founding Chairman Ryoichi Sasakawa — recognizes individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions to reducing disaster risk and advocating for resilience.

The theme for 2025 is "Connecting science to people: Democratizing access to innovation and technology for disaster-resilient communities."

Nominations must be submitted by March 28, 2025. No nominations will be accepted beyond this date. Nominations are to be submitted online and must be emailed to [email protected]. Hard copy applications are not accepted.

The award has honored many remarkable individuals and organizations over the years, including Glenn Banaguas, a world-renowned science diplomat and multi-awarded scientist from the Philippines; Allan Lavell, an expert in disaster risk management with a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean from Costa Rica; and Yoshiaki Kawata, a distinguished professor and disaster reduction expert from Japan.

The 2025 United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction celebrates efforts to democratize access to scientific knowledge and technological solutions for community resilience.
