Crime drama “Green Bones” emerged as the biggest winner at the 8th Entertainment Editors’ Choice Awards (EDDYS), taking home multiple top prizes including Best Picture, Best Director for Zig Dulay, and Best Actor for Dennis Trillo during the ceremony held at the Marriott Grand Ballroom on Sunday.

The annual awards, organized by the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEEd), honored excellence across Philippine cinema — from mainstream blockbusters to critically acclaimed independents.

“Green Bones” also won Best Cinematography and tied for Best Supporting Actor through Ruru Madrid, who shared the award with Aga Muhlach (“Uninvited”).

In his acceptance speech, Trillo expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort behind the film.

“Of course, these performances wouldn’t have been done well if not for the guidance of a master choreographer and the storyteller behind the camera, Sir Zig Dulay. I dedicate this to him and to everyone who worked together to make this project beautiful — many of whom took on even more difficult tasks than what we do — so thank you very much,” he said.

“Thank you as well to everyone who watches movies today, spends money, lines up, and buys tickets. Thank you to our inspirations in life — my family, my commander-in-chief at home, Ms. Jennylyn Mercado. Thank you to our management and to all of you. This is for all of you. Long live Filipino cinema,” Trillo added.

Madrid, meanwhile, happily accepted his third acting award for the same role.

“This is already my third award for Best Supporting Actor for Green Bones, and up to now, it still hasn’t sunk in — the blessings I’ve been receiving are truly overwhelming,” said Madrid, who already won Best Supporting Actor from the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival and 53rd Box Office Entertainment Award.

“To be honest, there was a time I questioned whether I truly deserved to be part of this film. But on the first day of our shoot, I felt something different—something tugged at my heart. And maybe that was God’s way of telling me, ‘Just give everything you’ve got to this film, and it will bear fruit,’” he continued.

“For me, acting is a lifelong study. You should never be satisfied with any award you receive, because to me, this award will always serve as a reminder to keep giving my best and to believe that nothing is impossible,” Madrid added.

GMA Pictures, the producer of “Green Bones,” was honored as Producer of the Year.

Executive Vice President Nessa Valdellon reflected on the company’s journey saying, “I just want to say that two years ago, hardly anyone knew about GMA Pictures. My team was composed of documentary producers from GMA Public Affairs — it was just our dream to make movies, and now we’re here,”

“Green Bones” creator JC Rubio dedicated the film to his late father and to inmates whose stories inspired the narrative.

The prestigious Movie Icon awards were given to veteran actors Perla Bautista (represented by Renz Spangler), Laurice Guillen, Pen Medina, Odette Khan, Rosemarie Gil and Eddie Mesa (represented by grand children Max Eigenmann and Sid Lucero) and director, writer, actor and National Artist Kidlat Tahimik.

“I’ve spent time shooting inside jail facilities in the Philippines. I met so many people there and learned so many stories from our persons deprived of liberty — this is for them. And this is also for my father, who passed away early at the age of 48. He taught me how to be a good person, and that is basically the core message of this film,” said Rubio.

Meanwhile, Marian Rivera earned Best Actress for her performance in “Balota,” while Lorna Tolentino received Best Supporting Actress for “Espantaho.”

“I always say that if I hadn’t become an actor, I would have been a teacher — because it was my dream to teach. While working on “Balota,” I had many realizations in my life. I realized that this is what my spirit, my soul, had been longing for — to make a film where I wasn’t thinking about how I looked, but just focused on acting truthfully, grounded in emotion and the scenes I needed to portray,” Rivera shared in her speech.

“That’s why I say teachers are truly something else — the way they risk their lives to safeguard our nation’s votes, the kind of work they do is on a different level, and it’s not easy for them. So tonight, I want to dedicate this trophy to all teachers — not just for their role in elections or in guarding the ballots, but for their daily dedication to teaching students, tirelessly serving as second parents in the classroom,” she continued.

“I also want to dedicate this to everyone who truly cares for our country. We all need to come together and help one another. We know the wounds of our nation, and we shouldn’t simply accept them as they are,” Rivera added.

Other winners included “Under A Piaya Moon” for Best Screenplay, “Isang Himala” for Best Musical Score, “The Kingdom” for Best Production Design, “Topakk” for Best Sound, and “My Future You” for Best Editing. The original theme song “Museo” by Eliza Maturan, also from “My Future You,” received the award for Best Original Theme Song.

Box Office Hero awards were presented to Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards (“Hello, Love, Again”), Vice Ganda (“And The Bread Winner Is”), Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia (“Un/happy for You”), Piolo Pascual and Vic Sotto (“The Kingdom”), and “Green Bones” stars Trillo and Madrid. The recognition goes to performers whose films grossed more than P100 million.

The EDDYS also paid tribute to industry legends. Laurice Guillen, Odette Khan, Perla Bautista, Pen Medina, Rosemarie Gil and Eddie Mesa, and National Artist Kidlat Tahimik received the Movie Icon award for their body of work in Philippine cinema.

Ogie Diaz was named this year’s recipient of the Joe Quirino Lifetime Achievement Award, which commemorates the legacy of the late columnist and television host known for his prominence in the 1970s and 1980s. Veteran entertainment editor Crispina Belen received the Manny Pichel Award, named after the respected broadsheet editor. Meanwhile, RS Francisco was honored with the Isah V. Red Award, which recognizes individuals who support and uplift underprivileged Filipinos.

The ceremony, hosted by Alexa Ilacad, Darren Espanto, Kaila Estrada, and Kyline Alcantara, was held at the Ceremonial Hall of the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Pasay City. Mr. Fu and Alexa Miro served as red carpet hosts.

A delayed telecast will air on Kapamilya Channel and Jeepney TV, with international streaming on iWantTFC starting July 27.

The event was presented by Playtime PH in partnership with Newport World Resorts and ABS-CBN. Co-presenters included Globe and Unilab. Additional support came from Senators Camille Villar, Mark Villar, and Chiz Escudero, Beautederm Corporation, Luxxe White, Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival, Kat Corpus, My Daily Collagen, and Brightlight Entertainment. The show was directed by Eric Quizon.

Vote verification was handled Juancho Robles’s auditing firm, Chan Robles & Company, CPAs.

The EDDYS is organized annually by the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEEd), a non-profit group composed of current and former entertainment editors from national newspapers, tabloids, and online platforms.
