MANILA, Philippines — After weeks on the job as chairman of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure looking into ghost flood control projects running into billions, retired Supreme Court justice Andres Reyes Jr. has become a placard-carrying advocate for love of country and a warrior against greed and selfishness.
In his first briefing before reporters covering the ICI, Reyes carried with him a placard with the words “What The World Needs Now Is Love, (Not Greed), (Not Selfishness),” in all caps.
There was no prepared speech nor one-liners.
Asked by reporters about this, Reyes said that he wanted to spread the message on the need for love in the country.
“We need to love our country,” Reyes said. “You know, we need to love one another.”
He said that there was a need for people to have the inclination to help the poor if they have more, and also to help the government.
“That’s what is needed: love,” Reyes said in Filipino. “Not greed, when one has a lot of money, they should not hide it and keep it for themselves.”
“What we see is people wanting everything for themselves. When one has three pairs of shoes, they will want to make it five," he said.
“Sometimes, you have to realize we are not a rich country,” Reyes said.
He said that having imported luxury brand clothing and accessories was for them a symbol of accomplishment or achievement.
Reyes was apparently referring to the flaunting of wealth by those implicated in the flood control corruption scandal as well as their children.
“We cannot hate right now… We have to love one anotherand we have to love our country,” Reyes said.
