A week removed from her record-setting feat, rookie sensation Shaina Nitura takes over anew to lead the Adamson Lady Falcons to a strong start in the second round
MANILA, Philippines – Following a five-set downer — one that spoiled a historic feat from rookie star Shaina Nitura — to end the first round, the Adamson Lady Falcons returned to the winning track.
The Lady Falcons opened the second round on a high note, taking down the winless UE Lady Warriors, 25-20, 25-11, 25-21, in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday, March 22, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Fresh from her league-record 38-point performance in a loss against UP, Nitura dropped 18 points off 17 attacks to lead the Lady Falcons once more.
“We learned a lot on what happened in the first round since there were some really crucial games [that we lost] in the first round,” Nitura said in Filipino. “This time, we are eager to take more wins now, than just winning merely sets.”
“This second round, we push harder than we did in the first round,” she added.
Mayang Nuique also added 11 points, while Barbie Jamili provided an extra offensive spark with 9 points to backstop Nitura for their third win in the season.
“I continued to encourage and motivate them, especially we are now here in the second round. We just take things one game at a time for now,“ said Adamson head coach JP Yude in Filipino.
“Number one thing for now is aim for the best, and then we work hard for it. For me, nothing is impossible for our team. We learn in everything we do on the court and then try to build off that and hope for the best,“ he added.
The Lady Falcons were in cruise control for most of the game, keeping the Lady Warriors at bay until the third set when UE found their groove to open a 16-13 lead late.
Adamson then zoomed into a 12-5 finish to seal the sweep that put them within the Final Four range.
On the other hand, KC Cepada put up 10 points on 8 attacks while Nessa Bangayan contributed 8 markers in UE’s eighth loss in as many games.
Adamson will next face the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Saturday, March 29, at the Araneta Coliseum, while UE will look to bounce back against the FEU Lady Tamaraws on Wednesday, March 26, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan. – Rappler.com
