With all of the Dutertes' convincing victories, the family is out to show what Duterte power is all about
DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Nothing is mightier than the Duterte name in Davao City. That much has been proven by members of the Duterte family who swept the local races in the May 12 elections.
With their new victories, the dynasty now has a total of seven elected officials in government.
Vice President Sara Duterte, the incumbent second highest official of the land, is joined by five Duterte men who registered fresh wins this May. On top of the six Dutertes is January Navares Duterte — Paolo Duterte’s wife — who is serving as Barangay Catalunan Grande chairperson in Davao City
For the May polls, former president Rodrigo Duterte leads the pack after winning as mayor for the eighth time. He won over his contender, former Cabinet secretary and acting spokesperson Karlo Nograles.
The older Duterte’s victory means that the dynasty will hold the mayoralty post for another three years — 37 years in total. Only a Duterte has sat as mayor since 1988 up to present, except in 1998 to 2001.
Duterte’s son, Sebastian, won the race over former vice mayor Bernie Al-ag and two other candidates.
Since the former president is detained in The Hague, Netherlands over his crimes against humanity case, Sebastian might be appointed acting mayor. Interior chief Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla told Rappler earlier that if the winning mayor is unable to fulfill his duties, the winning vice mayor takes his place temporarily.
Sebastian will lead Davao City again, after serving as mayor from 2022 to 2025.
In the congressional races, Paolo Duterte successfully defended his seat against PBA representative Migs Nograles and development worker Mags Maglana in the 1st District congressional race. He will serve for his third and last term.
Paolo’s son, Omar Vincent, also defeated incumbent councilor Javi Garcia Campos in the 2nd District race, successfully capturing the district for their dynasty. Following the victory of Paolo’s son, the family now has full control over two of three congressional districts in the city.
The former president’s namesake and other grandson, 27-year-old Rodrigo II or Rigo, also won his council race.
