Drew Arellano’s decision to undergo a vasectomy was based on factual information and not common fears.
In Raffy Tima’s report on “24 Oras,” Thursday, Drew said that he initially planned to do it last year, but was delayed.
“Hindi lang natuloy, kaya nagkaroon ng panglima. So nalaman ko na lang din na may mga kaibigan ako na nag-vasectomy after I did it because nga they reached out na parang ‘Oh. Welcome to the V club,’” Drew said.
According to the report, the Kapuso host conducted his own research, so he knew that the common misconceptions about vasectomy are not true.
“If there’s already medical data, then ako, you know I follow medical data. And I believe when the data shows itself that it’s OK, then it’s OK,” Drew said.
Drew’s decision to get a vasectomy was also lauded by the Commission on Population and Development (CPD).
“We're super impressed with what Drew did kasi nga 0.1% of males in the Philippines undergo vasectomy. So it's telling ‘yung data natin pa lang, kaya to see a popular personality doing that, we laud Drew Arellano for doing that,” said CPD Knowledge Management and Communications Division Chief Mylin Mirasol C. Quiray.
She also reported that while there has been an increase in family planning usage in the country, it is only among women.
“Female-centric methods pa rin are the most popular method in the Philippines,” Quiray said.
According to midwife Trinida Fajardo, among the misconceptions surrounding vasectomy is that it reduces a man’s virility or sexual drive.
“Kapagka nagpa-vasectomy is pinuputol lang po 'yung anurang punlay. Kumbaga hindi po siya nakakaapekto doon sa gana sa sex. [‘Yun] ‘yung fear nila kaya ayaw nila. So hindi po totoo 'yun,” Fajardo said.
The report added that only 242 males have undergone a vasectomy in Quezon City this 2025 so far, compared to the 26,648 females who got tubal ligation in the same city this year.
