Canon is shaking up the mirrorless market with a redesigned EOS R50, now dubbed the EOS R50 V, boasting enhanced video capabilities and a sleeker, more compact body. Announced ahead of its April 2025 release, the new model ramps up video performance from 4K at 30fps to an impressive 4K at 60fps, a key upgrade that brings it closer to Canon’s high-end video standards and addresses the growing demand among content creators for smoother, more cinematic footage.
Building on the success of its original 2023 release, the EOS R50 V borrows several innovative features from Canon’s video-focused PowerShot V1, which debuted earlier this year. The updated model retains the same 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and Canon’s renowned Dual Pixel AF II system with focus breathing compensation—a technology also found in the EOS R6 Mark II—that ensures fast, accurate autofocus during both stills and video shooting. New video modes offer options for slow or fast shutter speeds, catering to different creative styles and action scenarios, while electronic stabilization helps smooth out footage when the camera is on the move.
In a bold move to streamline the design and reduce costs, Canon has removed the electronic viewfinder and built-in flash. Instead, framing is now done solely via an external monitor or the camera’s three-inch articulated touchscreen, which has been optimized for both portrait and landscape shooting. The EOS R50 V also features a redesigned grip, an extra tripod mount on the side, and a second video record button on the front for more intuitive handling—a clear appeal for vloggers and video content creators who need quick access and ease of use.

The new camera will be available as a body-only option for $649.99, down from the original price of $680, and as part of a bundle for $849.99 that includes Canon’s new RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 lens. This lens stands out with its optical image stabilization and innovative powered zoom controlled by a ring, making smooth zoom transitions easier whether shooting selfies or cinematic videos. Additionally, the EOS R50 V supports four different livestreaming modes through a dedicated button, along with HDMI output and compatibility with Canon’s Camera Connect and Switcher Mobile apps—further underlining its appeal as an affordable solution for live streaming and digital content creation.
Canon’s update to the EOS R50 underscores its commitment to making professional-grade video tools accessible to a broader audience. While the removal of certain features like the electronic viewfinder may raise concerns among traditional photographers, the enhanced video capabilities and user-friendly design are expected to resonate well with the growing community of video content creators looking for budget-friendly, high-performance options.
