CITY OF MALOLOS — Top officials of the provincial government of Bulacan and the city government of Malolos spearheaded the commemoration of the 126th anniversary of the Philippine Republic on Thursday at Barasoain Church.

The historic church played an important role in Philippine history as the site of the First Philippine Congress, also known as the Malolos Congress.

This year's anniversary theme is "Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan." (Freedom. Future. History).

Gov. Daniel Fernando and Vice Gov. Alexis Castro and Malolos City Mayor Christian Natividad led the celebration along with the guest of honor, Solicitor General of the Philippines Menardo Guevarra.

"This year's celebration is a testament to our unwavering commitment to freedom, future, and history. Officials and Bulacan sectors commemorated the sacrifices made by our Bulakenyo heroes and reflected on the collective journey of our nation," Fernando said.

Guevarra, meanwhile, said that the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s main priority is economic transformation.

He said this is the answer to completely free the country from poverty, ignorance and social injustice and to reach a prosperous and strong Bagong Pilipinas (New Philippines).

The program commenced with a flag-raising ceremony, followed by the oath to the flag and the singing of the "Himno ng Pilipinas."

Participants also took part in the "Panata ng Bagong Pilipinas," and in a wreath-laying ceremony to honor one of the nation's heroes.

The program concluded with a tour of the Museo ng Republika ng 1899, which showcases the rich history of the Philippine Republic.

Also present during the event were National Historical Commission of the Philippines executive director Carminda Arevalo, Philippine National Police Region 3 director BGen. Jean Fajardo and Malolos City Vice Mayor Miguel Alberto Bautista.

The First Philippine Republic Day Act, also known as Republic Act 11014, was passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives in 2016 and 2018.

The Philippines became a full Republic on Jan. 23, 1899, by virtue of the Constitution of 1899 adopted by the Congress of Malolos in their session in Barasoain.
