(UPDATE) SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro — A second year college student of Occidental Mindoro State College (OMSC) died after a boxing match at the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) National Games in Mambajao, Camiguin.
A report from the Municipal Health Office of Mambajao said a local medical team immediately evaluated the situation of the student athlete and gave timely health interventions to student-athlete Marc Mateo Castillo, who lost the fight via a referee stopped contest decision in the third round.
Complaining of severe headache but not unconscious, Castillo was brought to Camiguin General Hospital for further evaluation and hospital-based capability management.
He passed away at 5:03 a.m. on Sunday. He was 20 years old.
The OMSC community conveyed its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Castillo.

"It is with profound sorrow that the Occidental Mindoro State College (OMSC) mourns the untimely passing of Mr. Marc Mateo Castillo, our student-athlete who represented the Southern Tagalog Region in the 2025 State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) National Games held in Camiguin," read a statement from the school.
"The entire OMSC community shares in this period of mourning and stands in solidarity with those affected by this tragic loss."
The OMSC Administration is actively coordinating with concerned agencies and organizations, particularly the SCUAA and its associated committees overseeing the competition, to ensure a thorough review of the incident.
"OMSC takes pride in the courage, dedication, and achievements of its student-athletes and remains firmly committed to ensure their safety, well-being, and full support at all times," the OMSC statement said.
School officials have reached out to Castillo's family and are extending full assistance in the necessary arrangements for his dignified return home.
To ensure the safety and security of students, OMSC also suspended the conduct of all curricular and extracurricular student activities outside the province of Occidental Mindoro, except for on-the-job training.
The student athlete's remains are expected to arrive in Manila by plane on Monday afternoon and will be transported by land to Occidental Mindoro.
