Bretman Rock just took a piece of Bohol back to Hawaii.
On Instagram Stories, the Filipino-American content creator shared a video of himself putting asin tibuok, its shape resembling a dinosaur egg, into his iced matcha drink.
“While I was in Bohol, I learned how they make asin tibuok, and I also got one,” he said in the video.
“It’s literally a dinosaur egg of salt, and I figured to put some in my matcha because I see a lot [of people] putting sea salt in their matcha,” he added.
Bretman also shared clips in Bohol where he learned how the asin tibuok is made.
Asin tibuok is a rare salt unique to Bohol. It’s made by soaking coconut husks in seawater for several months, allowing them to absorb the salt from the water.
After that, the husks are dried under the sun for a few days and then burned slowly to ashes.
The ashes are mixed with more seawater to form a brine, which is then boiled in clay pots to harvest the salt. The finished product is a big chunk of salt inside the pot—“tibuok” means “unbroken” in Bisaya.
Bretman flew to the Philippines earlier this March and went to Palawan and Bohol. He also met Mimiyuuuh.
