MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines continues to advance its digital transformation across industries, and education remains a central focus of this progress. Schools across the country are increasingly integrating technology into teaching and learning environments as part of broader efforts to modernise classroom experiences.
However, significant structural challenges remain. According to the Department of Education, the system continues to face a classroom backlog of approximately 165,000 rooms [1]. At the same time, gaps in essential resources—including laptops, display equipment and other digital tools—remain a work in progress.
These realities mean that many schools are still navigating how to access, deploy and fully integrate technology in ways that meaningfully support learning.
In this context, true digital progress is not defined by screens alone. It is about technology that enhances participation, encourages collaboration and supports critical thinking within the classroom.
According to Ash Elshawbaki, sales division head of Epson Philippines Corporation (EPC), “Classrooms in the Philippines need education solutions that strongly focus on adaptability and inclusivity to address learning gaps and diverse realities.”
Beyond the screen: Creating immersive and interactive classrooms

Visual learning plays an important role in education. In classrooms of 40 to 50 students, maintaining focus requires a clear visual anchor that reaches everyone. However, not all display tools deliver the same level of visibility or engagement.
Research highlights the importance of screen size and clarity in learning environments. A study from Radius Research identified a “visibility gap,” finding that 58% of students in classrooms using screens 70 inches or smaller could not properly read projected content [2]. In many urban schools, flat-panel televisions have become common, yet limited screen size can restrict visibility depending on seating arrangements.
To help address this engagement challenge, Epson’s interactive projection solution expands the learning surface to over 100 inches. By tripling the viewing area of a standard television, these tools help create a more inclusive visual experience, making it easier for students seated at the back of the room to see content with greater clarity.
Interactive technology can transform lessons from one-way presentations into shared experiences, allowing students to participate and engage with content more directly.
As Elshawbaki notes, “At Epson, we believe that innovation in education technology must be practical, inclusive and designed to meet the realities of everyday classroom environments.”
An ecosystem of classroom solutions designed to meet diverse learning requirements
Beyond projection technology, Epson provides an integrated ecosystem designed to support various aspects of teaching, learning and administration.
Projectors enable collaborative instruction and interactive lessons. Heat-free printers support the sustainable and cost-efficient production of worksheets, project materials and creative outputs. Scanners assist with digitising documents and streamlining school processes.
While digital displays offer strong visual engagement, printed materials remain an essential component of many learning environments across the Philippines. Epson’s business inkjet printers enable teachers to produce learning materials on demand while minimising some environmental and operational impacts compared with conventional laser-based systems, depending on usage and model. This helps ensure continuity in learning materials, supporting blended approaches that combine digital presentation with tangible resources.
In modern classrooms, projection and printing technologies work hand in hand. Visual tools stimulate curiosity and explanation, while printed modules and guides allow students to review and reinforce lessons in a structured format.
Epson’s business inkjet printers further support responsible technology use in schools. Recognising that educational institutions are high-occupancy spaces, Epson has prioritised devices designed to help reduce impact on indoor conditions.
Testing conducted by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology and Testing found that selected Epson models, including the AM-C4000, AM-C400 and L6490, demonstrated very low emissions of fine and ultrafine particles in controlled environments. These findings reflect Epson’s ongoing focus on cleaner printing technologies that contribute to comfortable classroom settings.
In shared learning spaces used throughout the day, maintaining indoor comfort plays an important role in supporting focus for both students and teachers. Epson’s Dust-Free printing technologies are designed to minimise emissions associated with everyday printing, helping create cleaner environments for academic activities.
Elevating partnerships that drive impact

Epson’s collaboration with the Department of Education under the Adopt-A-School Program highlights its commitment to working alongside government partners to support educational development.
Through this Memorandum of Agreement, Epson has provided selected schools—including Oranbo Elementary School and Demetrio Tuazon Elementary School—with projectors, heat-free printers and compact scanners. These tools aim to support classroom resource enhancement in alignment with DepEd’s broader objectives.
This initiative builds on Epson’s earlier multi-year “Gift of Brightness” programme, which equipped underprivileged schools across the country with printers, projectors, scanners, label printers, document cameras and supplies. DepEd’s role in identifying beneficiary schools helped ensure that assistance reached communities where it could be most useful.
“Our sustained engagement in the education sector reflects our shared commitment to support public schools with practical tools and learning resources, working alongside educators and government stakeholders to help address classroom needs,” says Elshawbaki.
A future-focused vision for Philippine education
As the education landscape evolves, technology will continue to play a supporting role in creating engaging and inclusive learning environments. Solutions that enhance visibility, encourage interaction and enable blended instruction can help educators address the realities of large classrooms and diverse student needs.
Epson remains committed to developing adaptable, sustainable technologies that respond to these challenges. By working alongside educators and institutions such as the Department of Education, the company aims to contribute to ongoing efforts to modernise classrooms and improve access to practical digital tools.
The future of Philippine education will depend on continued collaboration between public and private stakeholders. Through innovation in projection, printing and scanning technologies, Epson supports classrooms in becoming more interactive and accessible, aligning with evolving needs of students and teachers.
