MANILA, Philippines — Eight Filipino seafarers on the Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier M/V Breadfan have returned to Manila after their vessel was hit by a drone while approaching the Port of Novorossiysk in Russia on Aug. 7.
The seafarers arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 on Aug. 16, according to the Department of Migrant Workers. They were met at the airport by DMW Assistant Secretary for migrant workers’ welfare services Maria Regina Angela Galias.
The eight received financial assistance from the DMW and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.
Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) vowed to provide assistance to Filipino seafarers affected by drone attacks on vessels in the Black Sea.
The DFA said the Philippine consulate general and the DMW’s Rapid Response Team in Istanbul, Turkey have extended assistance to six Filipino sailors and crew.
The DFA said the consulate has undertaken 19 repatriation efforts in 2026, assisting 159 Filipinos.
