MANILA, Philippines — With over 60 million micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Southeast Asia owned or managed by women, President Marcos is pushing for measures designed to address women’s limited access to capital and digital financial services,.
At the 4th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Women Leaders’ Summit in Mandaluyong City,
Marcos said removing barriers to women’s participation in the economy would help expand opportunities for women entrepreneurs and strengthen inclusive growth across the region.
“If we are serious about inclusive prosperity, we must transform the economic landscape for women,” the President said.
He noted that MSMEs are an important part of the region’s domestic economies.
“Under the Philippines’ chairship, we are accelerating digital financial inclusion and ensuring market integration explicitly benefiting women-led enterprises,” Marcos said. The President also called for greater investment in care infrastructure.
“We must also acknowledge a long overlooked truth – no economy functions without the care economy. Unpaid care work falls disproportionately on women, restricting their time and opportunity to lead in the formal workforce, especially in the so called non-traditional fields,” he said.
“By investing in care infrastructure and redistributing care obligations, we do not just support women, we unlock billions of dollars in economic potential across our region,” Marcos pointed out.
