ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard has identified the remains of the 54th fatality the PCG divers recovered from the sunken MV Trisha Kerstin 3 as that of Sgt. Windel Sabuyas Jr., as authorities described the soldier as a hero.
“He was last seen by witnesses assisting an elderly and a child with their life vests, remaining calm and purposeful amid the confusion – an act of selflessness that reflects the quiet courage and compassion of a true Alakdan Trooper,” reads a statement from the 11th Infantry “Alakdan” Division based in Sulu.
Sabuyas’ body was recovered on Valentine’s Day and identified through his ID cards and handgun.
The death toll in the sinking has risen to 57 after three more bodies were recovered by PCG technical divers yesterday morning.
The Trisha Kerstin 3 sank near Baluk-Baluk Island in Basilan on Jan. 26.
“Gone but never forgotten. His bravery and selfless service remain etched in the legacy of the Alakdan troopers,” the 11th ID said.
The Army unit said the recovery of the remains of Sabuyas brought closure to the search and allows his loved ones and fellow Alakdan troopers to honor him with dignity.
According to the PCG, the number of missing passengers is down to 22 after the recovery of the three bodies yesterday.
