MANILA, Philippines — Public opinion regarding the filing of an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte appears to have shifted, at least based on the latest survey by Pulse Asia.

The Feb. 20 to 26 survey, conducted a few weeks after the House of Representatives impeached Duterte, showed that only 26 percent of respondents agree with the filing of complaint before the Senate.

Some 45 percent disagreed with the move, while 23 percent said they cannot say if they agree or disagree. The remaining seven percent said they do not have enough knowledge to give an opinion on the matter.

Last December, a commissioned survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS) found that 41 percent supported while 35 percent disagreed with the impeachment of the Vice President.

The previous survey was often cited by lawmakers urging the Senate to immediately start the trial.

In the latest Pulse Asia survey, support for the impeachment of the Vice President was highest among those in Metro Manila at 45 percent, followed by those in the rest of Luzon at 34 percent, the Visayas at 23 percent and Mindanao at four percent.

Most of those who disagreed with Duterte’s impeachment came from her bailiwick Mindanao at 88 percent, followed by those in the Visayas at 46 percent, Metro Manila at 33 percent and the rest of Luzon at 24 percent.

Across socio-economic classes, support for the filing of Duterte’s impeachment complaint at the Senate was highest among class ABC at 32 percent, while disagreement was highest among those in class E at 56 percent.

Asked if they think the Senate will be fair or unfair as an impeachment court, 21 percent said the senators will be “fair,” while 35 percent said “not fair.”

Some 33 percent said they cannot say if the Senate will be fair or not fair, while 11 percent said they do not have enough knowledge to give an opinion.

The Pulse Asia survey had 2,160 respondents and a margin of error of plus/minus two percent.
