MANILA, Philippines — Three men who allegedly mauled a police officer who caught them vandalizing a metal fence in Quezon City were arrested on Friday.
Criminal complaints for direct assault with serious physical injury and violation of the local government’s anti-vandalism ordinance were filed against the suspects identified only as Angelo, Jasper and John before the city prosecutor’s office.
Brig. Gen. Randy Glenn Silvio, Quezon City Police District director, said the policeman was traversing Eulogio Rodriguez Avenue in Barangay Libis at 2:45 a.m. when he saw the suspects vandalizing a fence.
When he approached the suspects and introduced himself as a police officer, one of the perpetrators punched him.
After the policeman fell to the ground, the other two suspects took turns in assaulting him before fleeing on board motorcycles.
Barangay public safety officers brought the victim to the Philippine National Police General Hospital for treatment.
A follow-up operation led to Angelo’s arrest at his residence in Barangay Claro while the other suspects, who are residents of Barangay Quirino 3-B, surrendered at around 3:30 p.m.
“Let this serve as a strong warning that all violations of the law, including city ordinances, will be dealt with accordingly,” Silvio said in a statement.
