TUBA, Benguet, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has suspended the operations of 26 Victory Liner buses, after a multi-vehicle crash along Marcos Highway that left one passenger dead and more than 90 others injured on Saturday.
LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza II said Victory Liner was given a show-cause order yesterday, directing the bus firm to explain why its franchise should not be suspended or revoked.
The operator was also summoned as LTFRB conducts a formal investigation, he added.
Initial investigation showed that two Victory Liner buses and an Isuzu sport utility vehicle collided at 8:56 p.m. in Barangay Taloy Sur in Tuba, Benguet.
One of the buses with 87 passengers reportedly lost its brakes while negotiating an uphill section of the highway. It collided with another Victory Liner bus traveling in the opposite direction and the SUV before overturning.
Cordillera police confirmed that passenger Muriel Galvan Soriano, a resident of La Trinidad, Benguet, died Sunday morning at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center. The BGHMC doctors said Soriano suffered severe traumatic brain injury with brain herniation as a result of the crash.
Lt. Col. Roy Calulot, Cordillera police spokesman, said Victory Liner would shoulder all funeral and related expenses for the victim.
Hospital records showed that 77 patients were initially brought to BGHMC, with 11 remaining confined as of Sunday morning.
