MANILA, Philippines — Three people were injured and 230 families were left homeless after a fire razed a shantytown in Mandaluyong on Friday, the Bureau of Fire Protection said.

The BFP-National Capital Region field unit said 88 fire trucks responded to the blaze along C. Fernando Street in Barangay Pleasant Hills.

Arson investigators said the fire started at 6:32 p.m. and reached the fifth alarm at 7:19 p.m., destroying around 200 houses.

After nearly four hours, firefighters put out the blaze at 10:15 p.m.

Arson probers are investigating the cause of the fire, which destroyed P1 million worth of property.

Marc Evangelista, Barangay Pleasant Hills chairman, said 600 people from 230 families sought shelter at evacuation centers.
