BAGUIO CITY — The Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) has apprehended 129 motorists for violating the speed limit in the Summer Capital covering the period June 14 to June 23.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the BCPO is sustaining the strict implementation of Ordinance 18-2019, or the Speed Limit Ordinance of Baguio City, as part of the strategy to curb the increasing trend in vehicular traffic incidents in the city.

The mayor said initial results are encouraging as a drastic drop in the number of accidents was observed following the speed limit implementation.

“This can be a good indication that the imposition of a speed limit is a deterrent to road accidents,” he said.

The apprehended motorists registered speeds that are beyond the prescribed maximum speed of 20 kilometers per hour (kph) within the central business district and 30 kph in inner roads.

BCPO director Col. Ruel Tagel said they have two speed guns that have been calibrated by the Department of Science and Technology.

Another one has been procured and is being processed for calibration.

The use of speed guns by traffic officers started on June 14.

The BCPO is also working on procuring an alcohol breath analyzer that is compliant with the updated standard specifications released by the Land Transportation Office.
