MANILA, Philippines — On its eighth weekend in cinemas, Disney's "Zootopia 2" crossed $1.7 billion (P101 billion) at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing animated film by a Hollywood studio.

It beats the record held by fellow Disney sequel but under Pixar "Inside Out 2," which ended its theatrical run at $1.69 billion (P100 billion).

That also means it has firmly cracked the Top 10 highest-grossing films of all time, ahead of "Inside Out 2" and currently behind two other Disney releases under Marvel Studios "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Avengers: Infinity War."

The new record for "Zootopia 2" only goes for a film from Hollywood as the highest-grossing animated movie is "Ne Zha 2" from China, also released in 2025 and earned $2.25 billion (P133 billion) globally.

Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman credited the milestone in a statement to fans, filmmakers Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Yvett Merino, and the Walt Disney Animation Studios team, adding that the movie itself was an "extraordinary achievement."

"Zootopia 2" previousy broke the records for the highest global animated opening ever, the biggest global debut for 2025, and the fastest animated Hollywood film and PG-rated release to hit the billion dollar mark.

Set just days after the events of the first film from 2016, Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) find their chemistry as police force partners and friends being tested as rumors of a snake being spotted in the city circulate.

Zootopia has not seen a snake for many years; in fact reptiles and most water creatures aren't often seen in public, which opens new chapters in the films' creative worldbuilding.

Despite their boss' orders, Judy and Nick begin investigating a case concerning a journal detailing the city's origins, particularly the weather walls — structures that allow the different animals to live in their preferred environments.

A pit viper named Gary (Ke Huy Quan) is indeed involved in opposition to a family of lynxes led by patriarch Milton Lynxley (David Straithairn), and the two partners go on the run searching for the truth about Zootopia's history.
